Blog: My Virual Exhibit - My Favourite Butterfly

Blog Overview: Ornithoptera paradisea - the birdwing butterfly of the paradise.   Tags:butterfly, insect, virtual exhibit

Looking at the message of Dan, posting an exhibit, I was thinking first about some old Nicaraguan stamps, but than I guess a topic could be more fun. I choose not the more beautiful stamp, but shurely the most beautiful butterfly. Ornithoptera paradisea, along with some Morpho or Agrias, are must-have in an entomological collection.
The species was discover by Staudinger in 1893.
It's flying in New Guinea.

Beginning by the country of origin of the butterfly, we find a stamp from Dutch New Guinea (Scott B 23), issued in a set of 4 butterflies in 1960. In those times, the butterfly was still Papilio paradisea.

Later, as Papua New Guinea, in 1966, issued in a set of 12 stamps (Scott 209-224). Now under Ornithoptera paradisea.

Here we shows a couple of FDC of this stamp.

u90757_PNG3576.jpg

In 1967 this stamp was re-issued with minor differences.

In 2002, in a set of 6 stamps (Scott 108-1043) a stamp of the pair, showing the female. This species is highly dimorphic, male is green, black and gold and female, bigger in size, is brown and white.

More recently, in 2006, in a set of 4 stamps, newly a picture of the male.

Out of his country of origin, this butterfly has been on stamps or cancels of at least 11 countries.

Ajman, in 1972, as cinderella issue, in a set of 5 stamps (Michel 1748-1752). Issued in 5 stamp strip.

u90757_AJ2563.jpg

Burkina Faso, in 2000, in a less classical way, shows this butterfly in a block on the stories of the century, a block of 16 stamps on Peter Pan (Scott 1174). What is the relation between this species of Papua New Ginea and the story of Peter an is still a mystery for me.

u90757_BK2211.jpg

Eritrea, in 1997, issued this species in a block of 9 butterfly stamps of the World (Scott 286).

These 2 items on cover look like they were a major find for your topic. Looks like you put a lot of work and enjoyment into this exhibit. Excellent!

Hi,
Yes, those two envelppes is the stuff I like more in this species of my collection. I am looking for real stuff. Stamps could be fake, FDC could be fake, so I look for enveloppes that have really been used in the mail. Those two enveloppes have been sent to me by collegues of the Natural History Museum of Paris, not for philatelic reason, just to communicate informations about loans of insects or publications preparation.
Main problem is that most of enveloppes with no stamps are throwed away by most philatelists.
Sincerely,
Jean-Michel.

Guinea Bissau, in 1984, issued in a set of 7 butterflies of the World our species (Scott 604-610).

u90757_GuB1978.jpg

Hungary, in 1984, issued in a set of 7 stamps of the World, the species, in a lateral position. The rare fact is that the color of the ventral side is in the stamp the color of the dorsal one. In reality, the ventral side is different, with nearly no black.

u90757_HU1375.jpg

As many of the hungarian sets, this stamp was also issued without perforations.

u90757_HU2139.jpg

Here we show also a FDC of this issue.

Oman, in 1972, year of cinderella for this group of countries, issued also his Ornithoptera paradisea.

u90757_OM1292.jpg

Rumania, in 1991, issued also one, in a block of 12 stamps, in a set of 2 blocks. 24 exotic butterflies (Scott 2696-3697).

u90757_RO1915.jpg

u90757_RO2979.jpg

The Saharaui Republic, of which I guess all stamps are cinderella, also issued his paradise butterfly, in 1994.

u90757_SAH1102.jpg

St Lucia, in a set of pairs of stamps issued a cousin of our species, Ornithoptera meridionalis, joint with Morpho rethenor, another wonderful species, this one from South America.

u90757_SL1584.jpg

Sao Tome, another expert of CTO stamps, issued in 1990, this species in a set of 6 stamps (Scott 945-950).

u90757_ST2917.jpg

And to finish our tour, Tuvalu, issued a small sheet, in 1993, for the Bangkok Philatelic Exhibition. (Scott 648).

I need to make corrections to the colors of the stamps. I had all the scans in a Word document. I pass it to PDF and then extract the pictures to set in this blog. In the process, the color changes to blue (no idea why). I have nearly all the world insect stamps in word files by country.
