WILDINGS REVISITED

2002 Wilding Souvenir Sheet

In Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden Anniversary year, Royal Mail also celebrated 50 years since the issue of the first definitive stamps of Elizabeth’s reign. These issues had been based on a photograph by Dorothy Wilding and the designs were reissued as a souvenir sheet of nine stamps and a label. The stamps were revalued to decimal currency, modern postage rates and postage rate differences. Overall it was a big mark up in price!

My numismatic cover shows a number of Dorothy Wilding's photographs, the front of the cover showing a delightful group of the Royal Family of George VI. The coin is a Half Crown ( 2 shillings and 6 pence ) of Elizabeth’s reign. The postmark is the 50th anniversary of the first issue of Wilding definitives, 5th December 2002.

The reissued stamps were given the values,1p, 2p, 5p,33p, 37p,47p, 50p, 1st and 2nd class. All were valid for postage. Compare with the original issue shown below.

Of course, the process of designing the original issues had led to many essays being produced before the final colours etc were decided upon. The two covers below each have a large illustration of an unadopted essay of two of the values.

The Wilding definitives served from 1952 until the first Machin heads were introduced in 1967.

A second sheet of updated revalued Wilding definitives was issued in 2003 using the remaining 9 designs from 1952.
